Today, we use regions of the globe to refer to styles of area rugs. Persian and Oriental rugs are very commonly known styles of area rugs, but the names have become broad terms for rugs in general. But these names and others actually have specific geographical meaning and common characteristics. These are some of the more commom fine rug styles.
| Persian | Persian rugs come from Iran and feature a specific hand knotted technique. Persian rugs are some of the most popular and this style can come from many places including India, Pakistan and China. |
| Oriental | Probably one of the most common styles of rugs, the Oriental rug has become a general term for any type of patterned rug. Oriental rugs are hand knotted like Persian rugs and can come from China, India, Iran, Nepal, Tibet, Turkey and Morocco. Oriental rugs are traditionally made from wool, silk or cotton. |
| Chinese | Colorful and dense, traditional Chinese rugs are woven from five-ply wool. The higher quality of materials makes Chinese rugs more expensive. Chinese-style rugs provide beauty at a fraction of the cost from the traditional style. Chinese rugs are very durable and commonly feature nature motifs. |
| Turkoman | Turkoman rugs come from nomadic weavers from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. These styles of rugs are distinguishable by their geometric patterns, floral patterns and the bold colors, typically red with white, blue and black highlights. |
