Get Ready to Send Off Summer & Welcome Fall

Though it's hard to tell by the thermometer, summer is winding down, school is gearing up and football season is just around the corner. After a long season of sweltering heat, barbecues and pool parties it's time to get your family and home ready the allergy season, cooler temperatures and the new school year. Everyone has heard the term "spring cleaning," but it's a good practice to clean and prepare your home for each changing season.

Use this checklist to help you get your home in order after the long, hot summer:

  1. Turn your mattress: Did you turn your mattress last spring? It's time to turn it again; rotating makes your mattress last even longer. While you're at it, thoroughly clean all your linens, and clean out from under the bed with a HEPA certified vacuum. Dust mites aggravate allergies and they love to hang out in mattresses; regular vacuuming can keep this problem at bay.

  2. Reunite long lost socks: Clean behind your washer and dryer. Wipe down each appliance and vacuum or sweep the area around your washer and dryer.

  3. Clean out your refrigerator/freezer: Toss out old food and containers/bottles that haven't been touched in awhile. Use a mild cleaning solution to wipe down all of the shelves and drawers inside your fridge. If you have frozen food or meat that you haven't touched in at least three months, throw it away.

  4. Clean your floors: Thoroughly vacuum or mop your entire house, paying special attention to underneath furniture and around the baseboards. Have your floors professionally cleaned every 6-12 months to keep dust mites and other allergens away.

  5. Clean out your cupboards: Take down everything from your cabinets and clean the shelves and doors with a cleaning solution. Toss out any spices or baking mixes that are over nine months old. This can also help you save money. If you know what's in your cabinets, it's less likely for you to purchase duplicates.

  6. Change the batteries: Just as you turn your mattress twice a year, it's also a good idea to change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well as other safety devices. Don't forget this important step; it could save lives.

This list will help you get started in ensuring your home is healthy and clean for the next season. Too busy to clean?
